Mantles

The Centerpiece of Your Living Room

A fireplace is often the focal point of a home, and the mantle is what frames it. Whether your style leans rustic, modern, or traditional, a custom-built mantle transforms a plain firebox into a statement piece that anchors the entire room. At Double LL Woodworking, we handcraft every mantle to your exact dimensions, wood preference, and finish specifications.

Barn Beam Mantles

Reclaimed barn beam mantles are our most popular style. We source timbers from old barns, warehouses, and agricultural structures across Texas and the surrounding states. Each beam carries decades of character — hand-hewn ax marks, nail holes, weathering patterns, and natural patina that cannot be replicated with new lumber.

After selecting a beam, we clean and treat the wood to remove any insects or contaminants while preserving the original surface texture. The beam is then cut to your specified length, ends are squared or left natural, and a protective finish is applied that enhances the character without hiding it. The result is a one-of-a-kind mantle with real history built into the grain.

Live Edge Mantles

For a more organic look, live edge mantle slabs bring the natural contour of the tree into your living room. We source thick slabs of walnut, pecan, mesquite, and white oak from Texas hardwood suppliers. Each slab is kiln-dried, flattened, sanded, and finished to highlight the natural edge and grain figure. Live edge mantles pair well with both modern and transitional interiors.

Modern and Traditional Mantles

Not every home calls for rustic character. We also build clean-lined floating mantle shelves in contemporary profiles, as well as traditional mantles with crown molding, fluted columns, and dentil detailing for classic interiors. Material options include painted poplar for a smooth finish, stained oak or maple for warmth, and walnut for a rich modern look.

Full Fireplace Surrounds

Beyond the mantle shelf itself, we build complete fireplace surrounds that include side columns, header beams, and integrated cabinetry or shelving. A full surround creates a unified look and adds storage for books, decor, or media equipment on either side of the fireplace.

Installation

Mantle installation requires secure mounting that accounts for the weight of the wood and the material of your fireplace wall. We use concealed steel bracket systems for masonry, brick, stone veneer, and drywall applications. All hardware is hidden inside the mantle so nothing is visible on the finished piece. We follow manufacturer clearance guidelines for your specific fireplace type to ensure safe heat distances.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

Can you install a mantle on a stone or brick fireplace?

Yes. We use heavy-duty concealed mounting systems designed for masonry, stone veneer, and brick surfaces. No visible hardware on the finished installation.

What is a barn beam mantle?

Barn beam mantles are made from reclaimed timbers salvaged from old barns and structures. The hand-hewn texture and character marks give each piece a unique rustic look.

How do you finish a mantle to be heat-safe?

We use heat-resistant finishes rated for proximity to fireplaces. We also follow clearance guidelines based on your fireplace type to ensure safe installation.

Do you make full fireplace surrounds or just the mantle shelf?

Both. We build standalone mantle shelves as well as full surrounds with side columns and header beams. The design depends on your fireplace and room style.
